Admission Process to SRM Dental College

The dental admission process to SRM Dental College, Chennai, is conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee of India (MCCI). The students who qualified for the NEET UG exam can participate in the MCCI counseling. Similarly, PG aspirants must participate in the NEET MDS counseling after qualification.

The NEET UG and NEET MDS counseling have a similar framework and include 5–6 steps. Each participant must complete all the steps to get enrollment in either course at SRMDC. Now let’s check out more details about the individual steps in the counseling process!

  • Application Form.
  • Payment of the Registration Fee.
  • Payment of the Security Fee.
  • Choice-filling.
  • Choice-Locking
  • Allotment.
  • Document Verification.

The process starts with filling out the online registration form. Once the MCCI announces the dates for NEET UG and MDS counseling, you must fill out the application to initiate your admission process. You must have already done it during your NEET exam registration. It is more or less similar to that! You have to provide all your details, such as NEET roll number, NEET registered email ID, contact number, and present & permanent address, etc.

Additionally, your past academic details, such as school name, address, PCB percentage, and 10th and 12th marks, are also sought for UG aspirants. MDS aspirants must provide their BDS academic information to complete the form. Your ICC details, all four-year BDS marks, college details, and university details are required during the registration.

Once you have entered all your information, you must submit the form! During submission, you must also pay a registration fee. You have to pay an amount of Rs. 5000/- online. This amount is non-refundable and must be paid to complete the registration process.

Once you have completed your online registration, the security fee deposition is done. You have to pay Rs. 2,00,000/- as a counseling security deposit to the MCCI. It is mandatory for everyone! However, this amount is refundable; hence, you will get it back once the complete course of counseling is over.

Usually, that takes 6–8 months, depending upon the sequence of the process and the counseling authorities. This amount is not adjusted or deducted from your course fee. So, you must prepare this fee and the source of online payment before you start your form registration. Also, check with your bank regarding your Internet banking payment limits!

As you pay the security deposit, you become eligible for choice-filling! The name justifies that in this step, you enter your choices of college and course. NEET UG students can add their dental college options, while NEET MDS students have to add their choice of specialty as well! I often come across questions from students about how to enter the choices. Well, entering the choices is simple and easy; the quest is, what choices must you enter?

It is confusing for students to filter out the best options without having complete information about all the dental institutes. I have added a column below so you can go through it and use it as a guide to choose a good dental institute.

Once you complete the choice filling, lock the choices! This is carried out during the choice-locking round.

Once the previous round is closed, in 2-3 days you will be able to view your results!  The allotment and results are announced online by the counseling authorities. You can check your results and confirm your admission in the next step.

Finally, we have arrived at the last step of the NEET counseling and admission process, i.e., the document verification round. Once you agree to accept your allotted dental institute, you have to visit the designated authorities. It is also known as the reporting procedure; during this round, you must appear in front of the admission authorities. You must submit all your documents for verification, and once verified, you will receive the admission confirmation letter from them!

It is compulsory to go for physical verification if you want to stick to your allotted college. Failure to produce your documents can lead to admission cancellation. So, keep all your original documents and 2-3 extra sets of photocopies ready for this round!

So, here ends your admission process to SRM Dental College, Chennai! I hope this will help you during your NEET UG and MDS counseling. If you still have any doubts or queries, feel free to approach us and clear your doubts!

How to Choose a Dental College?

Now comes the most important question, which I have spoken about in the choice-filling round. Choosing the appropriate dental college is one of the most important concerns. Your complete career depends on it!  If you are planning for BDS, you must check out the list of parameters I have listed here below:

The recognition of the dental institute. The dental institute where you are planning for admission must have Dental Council of India (DCI) recognition.

The university affiliation of the dental college. The college must be affiliated with a recognized university. The curriculum, exams, and other academic requirements are administered under that university.

The accreditation of the dental college. The NAAC accreditation is a crucial factor, and you must evaluate it before joining a dental college. It reflects the overall quality of any institute.

The infrastructure and facilities are available in the dental college. If you join a dental course, you must understand that having a fully functional general hospital, good classrooms or lecture theaters, laboratories, simulation centers, implant operatories, an adequate number of dental chairs, and the latest technologies are important. The dental curriculum demands a lot of practical learning along with theory. Hence, a well-designed infrastructure with all basic to modern facilities does make a difference in education!

The everyday patient flow! One of the most important factors is the OPD of the dental hospital. As I mentioned already, the curriculum includes a substantial amount of practical learning. So, without a sufficient number of patients, you will only learn the theoretical or pre-clinical aspects of dentistry, which is not enough to flourish as a dental practitioner.

An average of 150-250 patients is considered a good patient flow in a dental college. It also depends on the number of students enrolled per year. So, you must evaluate the student-patient ratio before joining any dental college.

Last but not least, the environment and safety of the campus. Especially if you are planning to put up in the college hostels. The connectivity and transport facility is also important to evaluate before you join there. This will make your stay easier since you will reside there for a long period.

MDS students must evaluate all the above factors. However, you must research the specific department you target in a particular college of interest. For eg, if you are planning for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, you must evaluate the kind of practice and treatment protocols followed there.

The research facility, past dissertations, faculty support, types of special cases, advanced treatment facility, and even the alumni experience can help you to know a college more than enough before joining.
