Minimum NEET Rank and Marks Needed for BDS Admission – Personal Analysis

Heya readers! If you are reading this blog, surely you must be planning to join the BDS course next year. Let me give you a brief introduction about what’s in store for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course.

Well, the BDS course is an undergraduate program completed over 4 years of study and 1 year of rotatory internship. In the first three years, you will be reading both medical and dental subjects.

However, the final year includes eight dental specializations, and the entire course also includes practicals for all subjects. The BDS course is interesting, and you will definitely like the journey to becoming a practicing dentist!

BDS Admission Process—Overview

Every year, admission to the BDS course is conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG exam) in India. This exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) every year during the second quarter of the year.

You can expect the exam dates in the first week of May every year. So, it’s high time to get started with your preparation!

However, to appear for the NEET exam, you must first register and fill out the NEET exam application form for undergraduate courses. You can expect the registration dates to be between January and March 2026. It’s mandatory to register and appear for the exam to join BDS courses in India. So, keep a watch on the dates!

When I speak to NEET-UG aspirants every year, I have come across a query from a few students. “Can I get BDS admission anywhere if I have appeared for the NEET exam?” So, first, let’s clear the air about this basic query! Yes, you can get admission after appearing for the NEET-UG exam; however, you must pass the exam with a minimum score.

This minimum score is also known as the cut-off mark and is mandatory to be eligible for admission. Merely appearing in the NEET exam is not enough; obtaining the qualifying score is imperative!  Below, I am adding the complete eligibility criteria for BDS admission in India. You can go through it once before you head towards your NEET exam registration!

Eligibility Criteria for BDS Admission in India
You must be 17 years or older at the time of admission.
You must have passed the 12th exam with physics, chemistry, and biology as subjects. (PCB combination)
Your PCB aggregate must be 50% in the 12th board exam.
You must obtain the minimum qualifying percentile/score for the NEET-UG exam.
Qualified students must participate in the NEET-UG counselling to complete the admission process.

Minimum NEET Rank and Marks for BDS Admission

Now, let’s get into a detailed discussion about the minimum NEET rank and marks for getting admission into the BDS course. The NEET UG cut-off score and ranks are announced by the NTA every year.

If you are planning for BDS admission, you must at least obtain this minimum score and rank to be eligible for participation in the admission process. However, the cut-off score varies based on the category. Hence, if you belong to the general category, you must obtain the minimum score announced for the respective category.

Likewise, the SC/ST/OBC cut-off scores will vary. If you belong to one of them, you must qualify with the cut-off score announced for these categories. The minimum cut-off score for the general category is always higher than for the other reserved categories.

What you must note here is that if a student belongs to the general category and has obtained the minimum cut-off announced for the reserved categories, they are still not eligible for admission. However, a student belonging to the reserved categories is eligible for both general and reserved quota seats if they have obtained the minimum cut-off score.

Now, coming to the minimum rank for BDS admission, you must be aware of the word AIR (All-India Rank). The NTA assigns a separate rank for each student who participates in the NEET-UG exam. This is unique for each student and has a crucial role in the admission process.

To get allotted in the BDS course, there is a minimum range of the rank as well. Multiple students can obtain the same score, or must have qualified with the minimum cut-off score; however, the rank of every qualified student will be different.

Here, a question might arise: if multiple students have the same score, how can they have different ranks? Well, the NTA assigns the rank based on the marks obtained in the individual subjects (biology, chemistry, and physics) and the age of the student.

So, if two students have the same cut-off score, the student who has obtained higher marks in biology will be assigned a higher rank. Similarly, the other parameters, such as marks in chemistry, followed by marks obtained in physics, are used to dissolve the tie.

If these are also the same for the students, in those cases, students’ age is used as a criterion to assign the rank. So, from this, you must understand that even though you must be preparing for medical exams, all three subjects play a crucial role in the NEET UG exam!

Now, let’s have an overview of the minimum score and ranks of the previous years. This will help you get an idea of the minimum average score for the upcoming year!

Here, I am also attaching the minimum rank information required for BDS admission, below. However, please note that I have only added the closing ranks based on category and not the AIR. The category rank is applicable for state counseling only, whereas the all-India rank is evaluated for all-India counseling.

Conclusion

Since you are planning for BDS admission in the year 2026, I hope this information will also help you to set your goals! However, your goals should be for obtaining the maximum score and not just the bare minimum!

This is because a good score and rank can get you admission to government dental colleges. On the other hand, obtaining the minimum score will get you admission in the private dental colleges only.

I am not pointing out that private dental colleges are less than government ones, but you can save a huge amount of BDS fees! And that, my friend, is always great!

Additionally, you must be aware of the fact that only getting the minimum score/rank is not enough to get BDS admission. Adequately participating in the counselling process is equally important.

This is because any error or improper planning to participate in the counselling process can affect your admission.

Apart from that, all dental colleges have an individual cut-off;  our counselors have great knowledge about the entire counselling process and the ranks and scores, which can help you to get admission in the BDS course smoothly! If you are looking for such assistance, we are just a call away!
